Perceptual Robotics - Automating Infrastructure Inspection

Perceptual Robotics was formed in 2016 and is based in the Bristol Robotics Laboratory. The startup is developing automated technology to evolve infrastructure inspection.

Dhalion, their flagship product, is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that carries out wind turbine inspections. The UAV carries a camera, choosing an optimised path to give full coverage of the entire turbine, taking hundreds of pictures and collecting inspection data. This is then compiled into easily digestible feedback, which can identify wide-ranging issues such as cracks, erosion, lightning strikes - in fact it can highlight issues as small as a millimeter in diameter.

The startup received an undisclosed amount of seed funding in 2016, and more recently gained a £210k grant from Innovate UK.

The increasing global interest in renewable energy has meant that the wind turbine market has experienced significant growth in recent years, but Perceptual Robotics have their sights set on a wider audience. Their technology, which reduces the time, risks and overall costs of inspection, can be used across industries - any infrastructures that are based in complex, outdoor environments (from construction sites to oil rigs) have the potential of benefitting from the automated technology.
